Middle Ear Tubes
- You should not get water into the ears. Mix vasoline into cotton and place it in the ears during bathing.
- Do not be alarmed if there is intial drainage or bleeding from the ears; however, if the drainage persists for over 3-5 days or occurs after this time, notify the office.
- Do not use Q-tips in the ears. Clean the ears only with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- After the post-op visit, you may swim on the surface with a bathing cap. If underwater swimming is desired, specially designed and fitted ear plugs may be made in the office. This requires a scheduled appointment.
- Obtain an appointment for 2-4 weeks after surgery. Additional appointments will be necessary every six months until the tubes come out or are removed.
- You probably will not be able to see the tubes and will not be aware they have come out until examined. The middle ear ventilation tubes usually migrate out of the eardrum over a period of months or years. It is also possible they won't come out until removed. This usually can be done in the office.
- When the tubes come out, the problem can sometimes reoccur and tubes be necessary again.
- The patient may return to school or work the day after surgery.
- There are no diet or activity restrictions except to keep water out of the ears.
